Whether you’re a beginner or seasoned player, their two brand new courts are open 7 days a week, welcoming both members and non-members. Located just outside the clubhouse, it’s easy to grab refreshments, enjoy the beer garden, and take advantage of complementary Wi-Fi after your game. Here’s everything you need to know about this exciting addition to the sports club!
History of Wakefield Sports Club
Founded in 1847, Wakefield Sports Club has a rich history that stretches back more than 170 years. It started with a single bowling green, donated by Lord Smirthwaite to a group of local men. In 1848, the club expanded when a local cricket team joined forces with the bowlers, creating the Wakefield Cricket and Bowling Club. Since then, the club has evolved into a 7-acre site offering a variety of sports including bowls, hockey, squash, and even a rifle and pistol club. The sports club has become a beloved community hub, and even houses Wakefield Jazz, making it a unique social destination in the area.
The central clubhouse, which once started as the modest “Bowls Hut,” has since been expanded and modernized, offering a social space for all members. It’s now a prime venue for private functions and social events. With its rich history and welcoming atmosphere, Wakefield Sports Club has established itself as a local institution, and the new Padel courts are just the latest addition to its diverse sporting offerings.
